As an artist you are always following, or at least attempting to follow, the rules of composition and placement on the canvas. I loved the strength of the center mast and sail and its total opposite shape
reflected in the water. That shape was so powerful it just had to dominate the canvas. I decided to break from those rules of
composition and create a cross in the center of the painting.
